An Alice in Wonderland-themed restaurant will pop-up in a secret venue in Chelmsford

You have to go 'down the rabbit hole' to get into the venue

A new kind of dining experience is coming to Chelmsford and it’s as Mad as a Hatter.

The "Alice in Lobsterland" pop-up restaurant will serve a four course meal set in a venue transformed into a scene from the famous book by Lewis Carroll.

Diners will have to go ‘down the rabbit hole’ to enter they will then take part in a fully immersive, four-hour Wonderland-style experience complete with actors playing characters from the book.

The venue is kept secret until 48 hours before the event and you will not even get to find out exactly what’s on the menu.

The event is being organised by the team behind the Dirty Lobster events, which recently started hosted a series of pop-up restaurants at King’s Coffee House in Chelmsford

Therefore Lobster is expected on the menu – but you won’t know exactly what dishes are being served until they arrive at your table. There will also be meat and fish incorporated into the menu.

You will be joined by four of the key characters from the Alice in Wonderland story throughout the evening, starting with the Caterpillar, who introduces you to the evening and kicks off the theatrics.

You will also get to meet Alice, the Mad Hatter and the dastardly Queen of Hearts.

“This isn’t like a traditional restaurant where you book a time slot, at Alice in Lobsterland everyone sits down together at long tables, like a banquet,” explained Dirty Lobster founder Tomo Travelskie.

Tomo is a trained chef who works at The Savoy in London and he developed a passion for lobster when he went travelling around America and Canada.

He was blown away by the seafood there and when he came back to the UK, he set about on a mission to source the best, affordable lobster and offer it to more customers through his own company, Dirty Lobster.

Tomo has previously run Alice in Wonderland themed pop-up events in London which were so successful that they ran for two years and were rated the best pop-ups in the capital. Now Tomo, who is from Essex, is bringing the experience to the county.

“There’s something about Alice in Wonderland,” he said. “Everyone knows the story and loves the books or the films. I love the Tim Burton film and that is what our characters are based on, it’s what inspires their costumes and make-up. I love the imagination and creativity in the movie.

“We run lots of different events but this is one of the most exciting. We aim to create a little bit of Lewis Carroll’s world as part of a dining experience.

“Alice in Lobsterland is a whole night out. We want to bring people’s memories back and give them a real experience and a night to remember and talk about afterwards.”

There are three Alice in Lobsterland events coming to Chelmsford. Here are the details:

Times: 7pm – 11pm
